God has filled his Word to us with compelling imagery, stories and descriptions. These help His message come alive and speak to our hearts. Even more, He has spoken of things yet to come in a way that shapes our imagination and enlivens our desires. This is the power of biblical vision – leading us forward and helping to set our course. The Bible provides various examples of such vision for the church, for our lives. By the Spirit, we receive certain promises of what’s the come; by the Spirit, we believe them and live differently. Revelation 7:9-17 is this type of vision. Here, the Apostle John sees the heavenly reward for those who persevere in faith. It’s a scene overflowing with glory and praise, a scene describing the destiny of the diverse and rescued multitudes of God’s people and their relationship with their Christ. In studying this passage this month, we’ll shape our imaginations around God’s promises – and we’ll also begin to see, understand and be captured by the vision we believe God has given our specific church community.
