Pause: Sabbath

Summary: The Lord calls his people to rest. Trust him and set aside a day to cease striving.

From Series: "Pause"

Advent 2021 “Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him,” Psalm 37:7 We tend to focus on the wonderful, miraculous saving activity of Christmas – the Christ is Born! The Word of God incarnate and mighty to save. But in our focus, we overlook the periods of silence on either side of this world altering intervention. Prior to Jesus’ birth, the people had been waiting for hundreds of years. The Lord had spoken through Daniel, Haggai, Zechariah, Malachi and more – but then He had grown silent. Pause. What were His people to do? Then, in jubilant fulfillment, the Christ is Born! But… after the birth, there are decades more before his baptism and Kingdom ministry, decades before the cross and resurrection. Pause. How would the plan of God unfold? When would God bring justice and establish his Kingdom forever? In the Scripture, there is more pause than action, more blank years than full, more silence than words. God’s not afraid to take his time. It’s WE who have the problem with it! This December, as we revisit the good news of the Christ Incarnate, we too are taking an intentional PAUSE amid our cultural season of frenzy. We pause in expectancy and silence, in listening and waiting in hoping and longing. We silence ourselves before God and listen for him, trusting as we wait and receiving as we trust. Pause.
