Uncommon People: Seeing and believing the Resurrection

Summary: It’s common for us to miss things, even when they should be obvious. With the resurrection of Jesus, we need the Lord to open our eyes so that we might see and believe!

Accepting our own commonality can be a sign of healthy humility. But let’s think about it another way for a season. Let’s think about “common” in terms of “what to expect in the world.” By this definition, doing what we want, when we want, for ourselves alone – that’s common. Living for our own glory and security in the here and now – that’s common. Holding grudges and holding ourselves at a distance from those we look down upon – that’s common. Ironically, it’s even common to think too highly of ourselves and our abilities. It doesn’t take any of God’s grace or mercy to be a “common” person. But the Lord Jesus calls us to be uncommon – standing out with the marks of God’s Spirit and the ways of God’s Kingdom. We are studying Luke 15-18 so that we might be formed together as an uncommon people. We find here the Lord Jesus “on the way to Jerusalem” in obedience to the Father. His attention had turned to the accomplishment of his primary purpose, his sin-conquering sacrifice and death-vanquishing resurrection. Along the way, he prioritizes teaching and discipleship. He focuses on forming his disciples. In doing so, Jesus paints the picture of a new kind of people who belong to a new kind of community. His disciples would be kingdom people – radically different than people of the world. An uncommon people. Might we too, as disciples who make disciples, be formed together as an uncommon people, vibrant and ready to serve the Lord.
