Unite My Heart: Course Change (Psalm 86:11-13)

Summary: Psalm 86:11 is course change prayer - a new path and a new desire. We need both to walk in the way of God.

From Series: "Unite My Heart, LORD"

In Psalm 86:11 David prays, Teach me your way that I may rely on your faithfulness; give me an undivided heart, that I may fear your name. With a desire to walk in his Lord’s ways, David asks for instruction and heart change. He needs to know the truth, but knowing alone isn’t sufficient. He realizes the Spirit of God must unite all the disparate desires of his heart so that his life will reflect his knowledge. We need the same. To follow the Lord with whole hearts and lives, we need to know the truth and then be set free. A divided, distracted heart sets our eyes on our fears, ourselves and our dreams – and takes away our ability to fear HIM and trust his truth. An undivided heart – one unified on the person and purposes of God – frees us to live for God. Where do we get this heart and what could occur in and through us as we live with this increasing freedom? In January we’ll walk through Psalm 86 together as an extended prayer for God to move. Then, the second portion of our series will answer the questions: What is truth? What is an undivided heart? How do we live this out? We’ll begin from the prayer of 86:11 and examine integrity, purity, justice and righteousness – ways of a life of one who fears the Lord.
