Faithful in our Time: Humble Yourselves

Summary: The swirling contradictions and confession of Naaman’s life illustrate Jesus’ teaching: everyone who exalts themselves will be humbled, but those who humble themselves will be exalted.

From Series: "Faithful in Our Time"

Elijah and Elisha served Yahweh in their time. They did not get to pick their situation. Israel from 875-795BC was a time of syncretism, idolatry, war; a time when the worship of the true God seemed to dwindle. The northern tribes had separated from David’s line and Jerusalem, choosing to go their own way and worship other gods. And yet some, including these two prophets, remained faithful to Yahweh. The recording of their stories echoes the ministry of Jesus for the church. Likewise, our lives occur within the larger story of God’s creating and saving work. We’re each given a time of His choosing, our portion. Our time looks different than the times before or after. We’re each created and shaped in God’s sovereign care and will to bring something different to our time. No matter the time, faithfulness is success in God’s eyes. So just as the prophets were faithful in their time, God asks us to be faithful in ours. This is possible because God is faithful first – and always. The faithfulness of God in Christ empowers our true and wholehearted obedience. No matter the situation or circumstance, we are called and enabled to be faithful. May the Lord bring this faithfulness by His Spirit as we read and submit ourselves to God’s revelation in 1 & 2 Kings
