Elders & Deacons
We are a church governed by elders (1 Timothy 3), who shepherd God’s flock (Acts 20:28) as they submit to the Great Shepherd himself (1 Peter 5:4). We believe leadership is called by God, defined by servanthood (John 13:13-17), and led by the Spirit.
We believe deacons are part of how the Bible describes the church leadership (Phil. 1:1, 1 Tim. 3:8-13). We believe deacons are servants – both of the gospel and of people. Deacons support the elders in the pastoral care of the church and in service of the gospel of Jesus Christ, freeing the elders from many practical necessities in order that they may devote themselves to oversight, the ministry of Word, and prayer. As deacons, these leaders live accountably before God in a way congruent to their call, according to the Scripture.
Our elder team is composed of the following people: Don Brubaker, Bill Copeland (lead elder), Jim Dillenbeck, Dan Gritsko,Gary Lafferty, Geoffrey Maurer, Jim Smith, Tom White, Jim Walker, and Jim Witkower.
Our deacon team is composed of the following people: Heidi Hutson, Karen Klintworth, Dick and Connie Sylvester, Anne Waite, Lois Willis.

Geoffrey Maurer – Associate Pastor / Elder
Geoffrey came to the University of Virginia in 1996 for his B.A. He graduated four years later with much more: an incredible wife Kelly, the sweet and renewing experience of discipleship, and a call to vocational ministry. After serving for two more years at UVA with IVCF, the Maurers headed to New England for seminary. In 2005, Geoffrey graduated from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary with his Master of Divinity. They stayed in Massachusetts until 2009 as Geoffrey served at Covenant Christian Academy as the Dean of the Upper School, along with some teaching, coaching, and chaplain responsibilities. Feeling drawn back to Virginia, the Maurers came alongside the planting of another Grace Network church, Rivanna Community Church in northern Albemarle. During this time, Geoffrey taught at The Covenant School in Charlottesville, serving as a chaplain and coach. He assumed the role of Associate Pastor of Christ Community Church in 2011. The Maurers have three children.
Tom White – Family Life Pastor / Elder
Tom has been a Charlottesville resident his entire life, and he is a long-time member of Christ Community. He loves this town and is deeply committed to seeing the Kingdom flourish here. He has had an abiding love for children and youth, one that God kept kindled through his time in education, sales, real estate, and coaching. Now God is using Tom’s diverse background and work experience in ways that help him love our community well in his current role as Family Pastor. Tom is married to Amy, his high school sweetheart, and they have three children. He relaxes with humor, cooking, sports, and people (and people, and people).
